Walk and Hike with RPL and Walk Richmond: Thompson Community Centre

9:45 AM – 12:00 PM
Thompson Community Centre

Description

Join Richmond Public Library in partnership with Walk Richmond for its inaugural hiking event at Thompson Community Centre!

Walk Richmond is a free guided walking program managed by Richmond Fitness and Wellness Association (RFWA) in partnership with the City of Richmond. This is a free program of scheduled walks led by a RFWA Walk Leader and trained volunteers. Each walk explores one of the many different trails, paths and parks throughout Richmond. The main goal is to make it easy for people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities to take part in an activity that promotes their health and well being.

We will be meeting in the parking lot and explore the area over the duration of two hours.

We will begin the morning with a presentation and overview of RPL's Hiking ExplorePACKS, which you can check out on site! We'll also be providing safety tips and a hiking pack list.

Any adult and teen with an RPL Library card may borrow the ExplorePACKS.

The Hiking ExplorePACKS are starter packs, perfect for a fun and educational way to spend time outdoors and appreciate nature! Each Hiking ExplorePACKS contains the essentials:

  • Headlamp
  • Bivy sack (emergency blanket & shelter)
  • Rescue whistle
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency radio & charger
  • Trekking poles
  • Backpack
  • Compass

These kits are made possible by the support of the BC Parks Licence Plate Program and BC AdventureSmart.

What you need to know before attending:

  • We will be meeting on-site in the parking lot at Thompson Community Centre parking lot.
  • While the terrain is flat, there may be some gravel trails.
  • Please dress for the weather, as this program will occur rain or shine!
  • Kits will be provided, but please feel free to bring your own!

Waiver:

Please note that all forms of outdoor recreation have a higher level of risk than most ordinary activities, and therefore can be potentially hazardous and/or dangerous. This includes hiking and backpacking. Risk is always a factor with hiking, especially when weather is adverse or unpredictable, or when unforeseen events or conditions create a hazardous condition. Therefore, it is the responsibility of registrants to learn the necessary skills for safe hiking and have the proper physical conditioning, while hiking any trail. Everyone assumes full responsibility for their own actions and personal safety while hiking on any trail and should be prepared for all weather and wilderness conditions.
