About the Film
Hamnet is a historical drama about the family life of William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes in 16th-century England. The film focuses on their young son Hamnet and the close bond he shares with his twin sister and parents. When Hamnet dies during a plague outbreak at age eleven, the tragedy devastates the family. Agnes struggles with overwhelming grief while Shakespeare spends long periods away working in London’s theater world. Their marriage becomes strained as they cope with loss in different ways. The story suggests that the emotional pain of losing his son ultimately inspires Shakespeare to write the play Hamlet.
