I loved the film, could manage the written word, but I simply cannot listen to the speech without trying to correct it. I firmly believe this is typical behavior, often still in practice in areas. Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis & Chastain were exceptional. Much of it was hard to watch, I wanted to reach in & harm several of the characters. Sad to realize this behavior still exists. 4-7-2020 I tried this again and find the recording so garbled it's impossible to listen. I'll stick to the DVD for preference.
This is an outstanding book, but the narration really shines! Octavia Spencer, Bahni, Turpin and Jenna Lamia really bring the story to life.
This is one of the most enjoyable audio books. Various actors read the parts so it's more like listening to a radio play than a book. The story is outstanding but the performance really sets this apart from other books.
3rd time to read this book! So true to life in the South at that time! Made me miss (with all my heart) my wonderful Ethel and Mary, without whom I would have never survived my childhood or known what love is. Hope Stockett has another book in the works and won't be like Margaret Mitchell or Harper Lee
The audiobook is so good. It is one of the best I have ever heard. I listened to it in my car while driving. The voice actresses are all amazing. I had not read this before listening to it, and although I think I would have enjoyed reading it, I liked listening to it way more. I can't believe how amazing it was. As for the story, it is so well written. The author really understands how people think. She is a wonderful writer. I recommend this book for anyone. My husband also listened to the audiobook and really liked it.
I listened to the audiobook in my car on the way to work and LOVED this book! The characters are well developed and their respective speakers add so much to their dialogue. I found it very easy to distinguish the various characters and found that I actually looked forward to my long drive to work so I could hear about Miss Skeeter, Abeline and Minnie. The story is set against the time of 1962-1964 in Mississippi and I believe it presents a realistic portrayal of the time. I would definitely recommend this book!
This is one of the best books that I have read/listened to in years. The characters are so vivid and the the story reveals important truths.
I seriously could not stop listening to this book. It is much better than the movie, which I also love and have watched countless times!
January 2013 - I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book while listening to the book on CD. I have to agree with my sister M. A., this was a terrific book. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A. ---February 2013 - I concur with my children M. A. and T. A. as I too thoroughly enjoyed reading this book while listening to a CD of the book superbly narrated by: Jenna Lamia, Bahni Turpin, Octavia Spencer, and Cassandra Campbell. This was a great way to gain a deeper appreciation of the writer’s talents. While one could read the book in perhaps half the time because of the many pauses included to add affect to given conversations; it was well worth the extra time. This is a masterpiece and will surely be considered some day as a classic like Harper E. Lee’s ‘To Kill A Mockingbird.’ A must read book. Senior Doctor-at-Bass! D. A.
Set in the troubled deep south of the sixties where racism is rampant, the story of a group of white women and their black maids is told through the perspective of three different individuals, both black and white. You will cringe as well as laugh out loud as this brilliant story unfolds and plunges you into the world of the domestic help that is so deeply involved in the everyday life of their employers yet treated so shabbily.
The narration couldn’t have been better. The southern accents of the 3 women telling the story added that much more to an already rich narrative. Great story, well done, absolutely loved it !
Godd main character development, the antagonists and their actions are too comically cliche in some instances. With more depth, the book may not have been so popular, but could have given more depth of insight into the prevailing attitudes, conversations and activities of daily living in the mid-20th century South.
I felt the readers were well selected for characters set in the south (Mississippi). Loved the audio book made me laugh a little in the last few chapters(Minny & Abelen), you could feel the tension the characters where feeling in waiting for the reaction to the book. I did pick up the paper back book to ready the last notes by the author. I wish they had read them on the audible version. Just adds a little more insight to the author and the subject. The subject was not surprising, and a pleasant surprise that the ending was very subtle and left you wanting more. Next is the movie it should be good.
The readers are somewhat monotonous and found myself dozing off while listening.
I got the audio book because the book was awful and i wanted to understand what all the hype was about. While the audio book is well done and the story is fair and needs to be told, I still found myself bored and tired of the constant narration, talk, talk, talk. No description or surroundings, characters and it was very difficult to establish one character from the other. The Help needs some editing help. I wouldn't have published this book without it.
I listened to this cd and was surprised to hear all 3 main characters had their own voice. This cd was done with 3 people doing the story of Abelen, Skeeter and Minny.
The story was fantastic and had seen the movie afterwards with much enjoyment.
This audiobook is EXCELLENT! Each character is narrated by a different person which made me feel as if I was listening to a Broadway play instead of a book. The individual characters really took on personalities of their own and the story jumped to life! I loved it!
would love to for it to go on forever.read it every afternoon. good dessert book because it is such a treat!
Can't believe I was not more aware of what was happening in that time period. I lived a sheltered life in the North. Very eye opening book with engaging characters. A must read.
It was wonderful to hear 3 different women's voices narrating the main characters' sections: Aibilene, Minnie, and Skeeter.
Fabulous, destined to become a new American classic. The audio book is superbly done.
