If you ask me - What definitely brought this faltering film's appeal-level down several notches was the gross miscasting of Tom Ewell as the Richard Sherman character, a family man who just so happens to be the publisher of lewd and lurid dime-novels.

Put plain and simple, Ewell, to me, was sickening. Not only was his character an annoying idiot, but, his overall appearance was utterly creepy, and his attitude was so downright repulsive, that he made my skin crawl, big time.

Anyway - Please don't get me wrong here - I didn't hate The Seven Year Itch, but, with that said, I'm sorry, f-f-f-folks, but this film just didn't work its intended magic on me.

Oh, well - So much for the hitch of The Seven Year Itch. Yep. It's a real b-i-t-c-h!

Not bad, but really not good either. But, now I know what movie Ms. Monroe was in when the famous (or infamous?) white dress blew up, showing her legs!!

Given the subject matter restrictions placed by the 1950's movie censors, and Ms. Monroe's reported difficulty to focus during production, the movie comes off even now as well done. Definitely worth a watch. Recommended.

The capsule review should be this: overripe 50's sexuality trumps overdone 50's repression, but in fact it is more complex than that. In the persons of Wilder and Ewell, the smirking and leering is entirely distasteful...since their object (the persona that Monroe developed) seems so entirely angelic. How Marilyn triumphed over her type is never more demonstrated than in this movie, which asked almost nothing more of her than to fill out that iconic dress. She is a wonder. But how did she do it? It wasn't Paula Strasberg, honey.

I have always liked Marilyn Monroe, but, with that said, I honestly think that Hollywood totally wasted her by forcing her into a stereotypical strait-jacket and then trying to capitalize on her cliched persona by placing her into such mediocre junk as this "comedy" that was so funny that I forgot to laugh. ~~~ As usual, Monroe was clearly being presented here as a sex-object (who remained completely nameless). On top of that, she was given some of the dumbest and most contrived dialogue to repeat, so any opportunity for her to really shine was flatly denied her. ~~~ What definitely brought this film's faltering appeal-level down several major notches was the miscasting of Tom Ewell as the Richard Sherman character. Put plain & simple, Ewell was a sickening creep who made my skin crawl, big-time. ~~~ Yes, of course, I do realize that this over-rated sex farce was clearly a product of its time (the 1950s) - But, now, 60 years later, this decidedly weak-scripted tale of a male-menopause fantasy only flies at half-mast. To me, this film was nothing but a mildly entertaining curiousity piece, and that's all.

I didn't bother making an effort to watch this film in my younger days. Now that I have finally watched it, I think I was right in not rushing to see it. Apart from seeing a young, voluptuous Monroe, there isn't much else in the film. As a comedy, this film failed. Definitely one of the less work from director Billy Wilder.

I love the part where she's considering aloud how to cool off her apartment, "No, that would be too icky!"
