Merit has been a vampire for only a short while, but she's already seen a lifetime's worth of trouble. She and her Master, centuries-old Ethan Sullivan, have risked their lives time and again to save the city they love. But not all of Chicago is loving them back.

Anti-vampire riots are erupting all over town, striking vampires where it hurts the most. A splinter group armed with Molotov cocktails and deep-seated hate is intent on clearing the fanged from the Windy City come hell or high water.

Merit and her allies rush to figure out who's behind the attacks, who will be targeted next, and whether there's any way to stop the wanton destruction. The battle for Chicago is just beginning, and Merit is running out of time.

I am a fan of the Chicagoland Vampires Novels and enjoyed this book very much. I love the way Merit and Ethan care about each other and am glad that they still are an item. This book held my interest and I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

I've been a faithful fan of this series & one of the biggest reasons has been the character of Merit. She's been smart, strong & has tried to make the best of a life she never wanted. But I have two major questions about this instalment. First, where did that Merit go? She's been replaced with a character resembling the bumbling heroine from a B grade romance novel. Any success she had here in her role as enforcer was through pure luck as opposed to being due to her kickass vamp abilities. Second, was there a publishing deadline or obligation due? The overall plot line was in a holding pattern with no big changes or revelations. This is essentially a filler book with no advancements in story line or character development. There are 3 books/novellas coming out in 2014 & in my opinion, wait for those unless you feel a strong need just to be around these characters. You'll have no trouble picking up the action in a subsequent book. Let's hope it's one where the "real" Merit reappears with her mojo intact.

***SPOILER ALERT***Merit’s ongoing luck is beginning to annoy me. She seems to just sail through these books in a plastic bubble, immune to any real losses. Nobody close to her dies (permanently, at least). Mallory’s back on track and their friendship is renewed, Ethan’s back from the dead, and even when the rioters firebomb her grandfather’s house, Grandpa and Jeff both survive. For me, this lack of realism (never thought I’d accuse a paranormal book of that) really makes it hard to discern any character growth.
