A sympathetic portrait of a painful and confused period in China's history. It can't possibly be as thorough as a book, but for its medium it can't be better done. I most liked the archival photos and footage and the extensive use of interviews from a range of people: they transmitted in the most humane way how the political and economic changes were experienced by people.
Waaay too much detail.
Action, intrigue, drama. Joy and tragedy amid violent power struggles. Almost like a Hollywood epic, except it's real life.
This is a very well made documentary (3 DVDs) covering China's twentieth century (1911 - 1997) history. The documentary includes extensive interviews and historical footage which should be of interest to a wide range of audiences, from those who know very little about China's history to those who are experts on the topic.
