For fifty years, Anna Schlemmer has refused to talk about her life in Germany during World War II. Her daughter, Trudy, was only three when she and her mother were liberated by an American soldier and went to live with him in Minnesota. Trudy's sole evidence of the past is an old photograph; a family portrait showing Anna, Trudy, and a Nazi officer, the Obersturmfuumlehrer of Buchenwald. Driven by the guilt of her heritage, Trudy, now a professor of German history, begins investigating the past and finally unearths the dramatic and heartbreaking truth of her mother's life. Combining a passionate, doomed love story, a vivid evocation of life during the war, and a poignant mother/daughter drama, Those Who Save Us is a profound exploration of what we endure to survive and the legacy of shame.

This is a well-written story from an author who also teaches creative writing and was an interviewer for the Shoah Project which documented accounts of survivors of Hitler's horrible German crime; so she had beaucoup sources for her novel.

If you enjoyed Jodi Picoult "Storyteller" and Tatiana De Rosney "Sarah's key", then you 100% would enjoy this book. Some of the reading has "pg-13" content, so I would definitely suggest this for adult audience only. Overall, I give this book a solid four star rating.

I found this book to be an interesting compliment to much of the other WWII historical fiction I've read as it comes from a German perspective. While graphic and heartbreaking at times, it kept me reading right to the very end.

A very engaging book that's well written. As the book was nearing the end, I wondered if I would be unsatisfied with the characters lack of resolution. I'll say no more!

A very, compelling read. I enjoyed her writing style, which was raw and simple, yet very beautiful in some parts as well. It really is a testament to her writing that I liked the book so much, because I usually detest it when authors don't include quotation marks-seems like a little thing but it really bugs me normally. In this novel, I noticed it in the first chapter or two but then almost completely forgot about it. There were slight, little things that I would change or wish would have been more clear and that's why it's not a full 5, but ultimately I would really recommend this novel!

Great read. The storyline will stay with me, which isn't always the case after I read something.
