Ten short stories, many of them re-visions of old tales (Hans Christian Anderson and the Bible make their appearance). All are set in strange worlds; most have a certain brutality to them. Reading them is quite a trancelike experience. I couldn’t quite get into them. As this author is highly acclaimed, I suspect that it’s less that she’s a bad author and more that she and I simply don’t mesh. The first story, “The Point of Roses” is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever read.
