Vulgarity in an R-rated film?! Well, I never! England was producing a lot of cockney gangster films in the late 90s/early 00s ("Gangster No. 1," anything by Guy Ritchie), but "Sexy Beast" sticks out from the bunch. From its opening scene, you know you're in for something a bit different. Ray Winstone plays a retired criminal living with a former adult film star (Amanda Redman) in sunny Spain. They are friends with another expatriate couple and are living a seemingly an idyllic existence until the psychopathic Don Logan (Ben Kingsley) shows up to recruit Winstone for one last job. It's less about the heist and more about the power games between Kinglsey and the other characters. He seemingly replaced his backbone with a metal rod and memories of Gandhi will quickly vanish. It's an explosive performance, but credit should be given to the other actors, particularly Winstone and Redman, who have to be more understated. Future "Deadwood" star Ian McShane is the criminal mastermind and Cavan Kendall, who plays Winstone's friend, died before the film was released. It's the first film from Jonathan Glazer, who started in music videos, which is apparent from the opening sequence, set to "Peaches" by the Stranglers. More recently he directed "Under the Skin." I still don't know what's going on with the Uzi-wielding giant rabbit creature.
