Plumbing: Basic, Intermediate & Advanced Projects is a comprehensive how-to book that prepares a do-it-yourselfer to handle any plumbing task in the home, from replacing a washer in a leaky faucet to cutting and joining cast-iron vent pipes. The author's emphasis is on doing things correctly, so all the projects use only code-compliant techniques. The book gives readers an overview of a house's plumbing system, including supply, waste, and vent piping, and explains the basic physics that keep everything working well. Readers learn not only how to plan and complete each project but how to spot and improve outdated or dangerous techniques and materials in their home's plumbing system.

The do-it-yourself books say that plumbing, of all home repair work, is one of the easiest to undertake for the novice. This book has a clear, no-nonsense approach to all types of plumbing repairs and installations, with clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of pictures and drawings. For example, the section on troubleshooting gravity-flow toilets gives instructions for nine different problems: slow to empty, dirty/clogged, slow to fill, constantly running, rippling water, constant hissing, sticking handle, stuck seat, and leaking base. The step-by-step repair instructions have difficulty ratings (one, two or three wrenches), a list of tools and materials required to undertake the job, and an estimate of the time required to complete the repair. I used this book''s solution to replace the S-trap in my unvented bathroom sink, with excellent results.
