From the extraordinary Neal Stephenson comes an epic adventure that spans entire worlds, both real and virtual. The black sheep of an Iowa farming clan, former draft dodger and successful marijuana smuggler Richard Forthrast amassed a small fortune over the years—and then increased it a thousandfold when he created T'Rain. A massive, multibillion-dollar, multiplayer online role-playing game, T'Rain now has millions of obsessed fans from the U.S. to China. But a small group of ingenious Asian hackers has just unleashed Reamde—a virus that encrypts all of a player's electronic files and holds them for ransom—which has unwittingly triggered a war that's creating chaos not only in the virtual universe but in the real one as well. Its repercussions will be felt all around the globe—setting in motion a devastating series of events involving Russian mobsters, computer geeks, secret agents, and Islamic terrorists—with Forthrast standing at ground zero and his loved ones caught in the crossfire.

Hey, a dot-com billionaire, a Russian mafioso, a Chinese hacker, an Islamic jihadist, an English spy, and an Idaho survivalist walk into a bar…
Actually, they don’t gather in a bar, but these are a few of the main characters in Stephenson’s improbable but raucous romp. Oh, and to make things more interesting, some of the action takes place through avatars in a virtual world as well… An unusual thriller, and highly recommended.

This is a rollicking adventure that goes around the world but in fact has some excellent action that takes place with detailed description a little corner of the Kootenays (not to mention Washington and Idaho). I've read it twice. Highly recommended.

Is there a place for a 6th star? So long (600? 700 pages?), and so memorable. You've already roared through 300 pages by the time the international terrorists make their appearance.

And, according to folks I trust, this isn't even the best of his novels. Apparently, he's a genius, and a bit of a nut. Can't recommend 'Reamde' enough.

More a techno-thriller than science fiction but a great and geeky read.

This is a long read (over 1,000 pages) but it's like a roller coaster ride without the dull parts. Lots of suspense and cliffhangers that will keep you turning the page late into the night.

From the Publishers Weekly review: "Stephenson (Anathem), the master of meandering, inconclusive plots.." Oh wow, one can certainly tell the reviewer has read Stephenson's books!

Loved this book, it was a little slow at the start but after the first chapter or so it had me hooked until the end.

This was a great book! So many unusual, and yet fully realized, characters, plus wild plot twists and lots of violent fun. Very different from Stephenson's other books (e.g. Cryptonomicon), but in a good way. I literally had trouble putting it down, and at 800+ pages, it got pretty heavy ;-) I hope he writes more like this one.

An excellent story! Lots of disparate characters come together for a final thrilling climax. Great stuff!

If you liked William Gibson's recent Blue Ant series you'll enjoy this as it seems very similar in style. If you're into WoW you'll love it for the online RPG angle (which incidentally even though I don't play any games like this I still thought it was pretty cool). If you're an out an out Stephenson fan you might find it lacks depth a bit compared to some of his other novels. It certainly doesn't have the innovation or scope of Anathem. As per the other comments it's fun, and progresses at a quicker pace then some of his other novels. Worth a read.
