On her Food Network show Sugar , pastry chef Anna Olson shows viewers how to create simple, original desserts that they can create at home. Now, Anna`s favorite recipes from her show are available in this book! Divided into sections based on key ingredients, such as Fruit, Chocolate, Nuts and Citrus, Anna`s recipes progress naturally from one dish to the next. She first includes an easy recipe and then follows it up with a " switch-up" -- a more elaborate recipe to dress it up or transform it into a whole new dessert. For example, Chocolate Orange Pudding turns into Chocolate Orange Cream Pie with the addition of a cookie crust and creamy topping. Throughout Sugar , Anna provides countless tips such as the best way to unmold a cake and how to prevent nuts from becoming a paste in the food processor. She also explains how following basic rules of baking leads to greater success. Sugar `s accessible, creative recipes and helpful hints will assist every home cook to create innovative desserts.

This book is beautiful! I love the concept and the way it's organized.

The recipes don't work.

I used to own a copy of this book and its sequel. I am a very good baker, and could recommend dozens of books with recipes that do work. (Baked by Matt Lewis is my current favourite. His other books are great too.) I tried at almost a dozen recipes from Sugar and Another Cup of Sugar. None of them worked as written. They had to be so heavily tweaked that I can only assume they were not properly tested (likely scaled down without testing the scaled down version). Different proportions, different pan sizes, different cook times. You name it. If there's a way to change a recipe, you probably have to do it to a recipe from this book.

So, if you want a coffee table book to give you ideas for your own recipes, this would be a great choice. If you want a cook book with recipes that work, look elsewhere. Eventually, I gave up and gave both books away.

Great recipes organized by fruit, ingredient, and key notes at the bottomo of the page. I would have liked to have seen more photographs of the items.

Absolutely love the presentation of Anna's creations. The mix ups are fun but I don't really bother with them. Some things are surprisingly easy...patience is needed though~
