In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines--puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win--and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

An incredible debut novel by Ernest Cline. The 80s video games, movie, and music references are all amazingly well-placed. It allows for a captivating story that readers (even those not born in the era, like myself) will enjoy.

However, at points, it felt like the plot relied too heavily on these 80s pop culture references. I would have much rather preferred the characters depend on their own skills and abilities, or at least skills not involving total recall of an obscure 80s trivia fact.

I loved this book. I got completely wrapped up in the story and could really picture an amazing virtual world that people would want to escape to. I think because I love video games and I really like the premise of this book, I might be a little biased in my review. I think the idea of a world-wide scavenger hunt in a virtual world sounds like so much fun.

By far one of my favorite books to date. The attention to detail is amazing and if you understand all of the gaming references Cline makes in the books it is even better. I will warn you, if you read the book and love it, the film adaptation may seem lackluster and disappointing.

Ready Player One has everything you'd expect from it and more. Clever, witty, and unexpected, this book will simultaneously take you twenty-five years into the future and back into the 80's. Prepare your haptic gloves and visor, it's going to take you on a wild adventure into the utopia that is the OASIS.

This book was amazing. Of course I personally disagreed with some of the characters beliefs but other than that it's a must read for every geek out there. I loved the movie so much and honestly was a little hesitant to read the book due to the fear of it not living up to the love I had for the movie. It's a great read.

Read the book before seeing the movie!!!

I resisted seeing the movie because I was told the book is fantastic and it took me a while to finally pick it up, but I sure am glad I did! Even if you've seen the movie, you should read this book. Cline brings to life 80's culture, video games, and the complexities of human relationships in the real world vs. the online world where anyone can be anything. His vision of Earth's future feels far too real and not far enough away as the environment increasingly suffers from human in habitation. And surprisingly, his message is not to vilify the lure of living a virtual life, but to remind us that online living is fun and a good distraction, but we need to keep one foot firmly planted in the physical, real world, if we are to survive.

Ready Player One is a fantastically written book. It integrates a well-thought out future prediction with an exciting storyline that attracts young and old people alike. It enthralls you into it’s simulated world, while slapping loads of 80s nostalgia into a realistic and horrific dystopian future. It’s complex storyline is weaved together with computer history, and sci-fi fantasy. The book as a whole is engaging, a real page-turner, and certainly well-thought out in terms of scientific accuracy and general future prediction. It makes you consider what it would be like to be in this world, and makes you ponder how to prevent this future from happening. Would recommend.

"Exciting and heart racing, readyplayerone leads you into an adventure you'll never forget."

Sci Fi isn't my typical cup of tea, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Ready Player One audiobook. 2 main reasons:

1) This was aimed directly at my generation. I was a teenager when video game arcades became popular. While I wasn't the world's biggest gamer or computer enthusiast, I recognized most of the pop culture references; the favorite movies named were some of my favorites of the time, so this was a real walk down memory lane.

2) Wil Wheaton was a brilliant narrator. I especially like that he doesn't take himself too seriously; he's on the receiving end of plenty of jokes these days and gets a couple references in this story which he plays with appropriately.

The story was a pretty silly in many places, even completely suspending disbelief, but it was fun.
