Almost all of the entries are book reviews, written over a span of 30 years. There is one extended essay on Adventures Of Augie March by Bellow which makes the book so interesting that its added to one's must read list. Many other works that fall under Amis' thoughtful gaze also merit at least a serious consideration. The essays are thoughtful in their own right (rather than just as book reviews), for example
"...surrounded by doctored thought, doctored language, doctored feeling. 'I need process', 'you should reinforce him', 'I was getting reacclimated.' The professionalization of ordinary existence: this is the enemy within."(page 382).
There are many other possible examples, about one or two per piece. Even the future is seen in literature 30 years earlier, with a twisted comic twist :"the 200 story OPEC tower which dominated Wall Street, its neon sign pointing to Mecca" (page 105).
