I began this book, but couldn't finish it. After the power and polish of Carey's Kushiel series, I was enormously disappointed by this novel. Derivative, awkward, and failing to engage the reader, it reminded me of nothing so much as a teenager's first attempt at writing fiction. Indeed, I wondered if the publishers were trying to capitalize on Carey's success by getting her to drag out some of her first attempts at writing novels, and putting them on the shelves in the hopes that readers would be suckered into paying for them.

I must admit, I had a much harder time getting into this book as compared to her Kushiel's series. To me, the story just didn't flow as naturally and I am having a hard time seeing how the second "unknown" line of the immortals won't appear and put prophesy further into motion without "la belle princess's" involvement.

Hoping the second book will be better.
