Isabel's incandescent curiosity is piqued when she is asked to help a professor of medicine who has been disgraced by allegations of scientific fraud concerning a newly marketed drug. Would a doctor with a stellar reputation make such a simple but grave mistake? If not, what explains the tragic accident that resulted in the death of a patient? An investigation is in order, especially since a man's reputation is in jeopardy, and a great deal of money is at stake for the pharmaceutical company involved. She's also occupied by the envy she feels in the face of Jamie's new friendship with the composer-in-residence at the University of Edinburgh. Whatever the case, whatever the solution, Isabel's combination of spirit, smarts, curiosity, empathy and unabashed nosiness guarantees a delightful adventure.

I actually finished this book on a Saturday, albeit, not muddy. It was a welcome return to the streets of Edinburgh, Isabel's family, and the antics of Brother Fox.

Isabel is getting a bit tedious with her eternal security about her age and that of her younger partner. A plot is mainly framework for Isabel's philosophical musings which Smith seems to relish as I do. His books are reflective, quiet, kind descriptions of Edinburgh's 'intellectual' circle. Smith writes marvellous comfort books for the low-key crowd.

I've been a big Isabel Dalhousie fan, but isn't it time for her to get over her "I'm the older woman" insecurities? This most recent in the series--in which Isabel confronts a doctor accused of misconduct-- seems more labored than in the past, unlike the Patience Ramotswe books, which seem as fresh as ever Isabel, it's time to get on with life!

Nothing special but I liked this story even though it was a little flat in it's plot. Just an average outing for Isabel Dalhousie, an average writing by Mr Smith.
