Through stunning images, acclaimed photographer Rick Smolan tells the astounding story of Robyn Davidson, who crossed the desolate Australian outback accompanied only by four camels and a dog. Now, Davidson's exhilarating wilderness adventure is about to become a major motion picture, and this remarkable volume presents both Smolan's original photographs along with those from the upcoming movie. As an exciting bonus, the book incorporates Aurasma technology that enables readers to point their smart devices at one of the pictures from the original journey and then watch that scene as it is brought to life in the movie.

I'm currently obsessed with Robyn Davidson and her trek across the outback, so this was a great read. Photos are stunning. Insider look at the movie was a little odd, but interesting nonetheless.

This big beautiful picture book from best-selling author/photographer Rick Smolan is absolutely remarkable. The book is divided into two sections. The first section entitled Inside Tracks - The Original Trek shows Robyn Davidson, her dog and camels with photos from 1977. The second section entitled Inside Tracks -The Movie is about the film Tracks which was released in 2013, with Mia Wasikowska in the lead role.
It is amazing is how the book seamlessly bridges between the original event and the creation of the successful film Tracks 35 years later. Mia Wasikowska wasn’t even born at the time of trek and the National Geographic cover story Alone Across the Outback that brought this epic journey to public attention in 1978.
An additional feature of the book, which is new to me, is the use of a cell phone app Aurasma that allows you to point the app viewfinder at designated images in the book to see how scenes of Robyn’s original journey are brought to life in the movie with Mia. It is eerie!
I especially relished the Postscript by Robyn Davidson to The Original Trek chapter of the book where she discusses her memories, and the blurring of the truth with time as it relates to the odyssey, her book, the photographs and later the movie. I will try to dig up some of her later writings as she has gone on to full and amazing life. tfc 2016/04/12
