Having read other books by this author including The Name of the Rose which I thoroughly enjoyed, i found this book a little strange. Words like weird or bizarre come to mind. There was a weak story line with alot of religious overtones and sexual references. Some parts moved along well and other sections just drug along at a snail's pace.
I loved The name of the Rose. I read it twenty years ago, living in a different time and space… Baudolino seemed to me too long, with too many unnecessary details. I skipped pages at the end of the book. Yet I find the idea of the book brilliant. The language, imagination, the balance of politics, romance, and laughter is perfect… Maybe in this space and time, I just can't focus on long reads anymore...
Not for the intellectually faint-of-heart. If you are fascinated by arcane trivia, and medieval processes, this book is for you. If not, stick to Harry Potter probably.
