“My life might have been different had I not been known as the girl whose grandmother exploded,” explains 10-year-old Pia. Shunned by her schoolmates, Pia spends time with an elderly resident of her small German town who fills her full of ghostly morality tales that shape Pia’s understanding of her world. Then, young Katharina disappears and Pia is sure these witchy stories contain clues to her whereabouts. A well-written coming-of-age mystery at once charming and thrilling.

The book was very slow at the beginning, but if you push through it you will find that the ending is breathtaking! You should also look out for the many subtle clues through out the book...

Very good book, well deserving of its Alex Award as it should be enjoyed by teens/young adults. Young girls are disappearing in a small German town and Pia and her friend Stefan try to find out what happened to them. Great German atmosphere and customs described. Peppered with snippets of Deutsch.
