Spinoza, 1632 – 1677, wrote his thoughts but never published during his brief lifetime. Though known in his circle as brilliant and challenging, he made his living grinding optical lens for the sciences and astronomy booming then in northern Europe. His friends were astonished how his insights formed into thorough philosophy and published his writings. They mentioned that he had sketched often, but that notebook went missing. John Berger imagines what Spinoza might have sketched and finds lucid quotes. Every second page has a wash drawing and paragraph excerpted from Spinoza's philosophies, making it palatable and tantalizing. Noting where and when he made his sketches, Berger connects unexpected ideas to experience, such as his tussle with bullying security guards at the National Museum, two weddings, gypsum, horse hair brush and swimming. He's a rad geezer dealing with knotty concepts and emotional strings. Bento ? Spinoza's shortened first name.

An excellent book... every second sentence is pregnant with meaning and insight. Diverse in its content, but it all fits together into a coherent work... unique.
