Heart of the Matter
Book - 2010 | 1st ed
"Giffin excels at creating complex characters and stories that ask us to explore what we really want from our lives."-- Atlanta Journal-Constitution Tessa Russo is the mother of two young children and the wife of a renowned pediatric surgeon. Despite her own mother's warnings, Tessa has recently given up her career to focus on her family and the pursuit of domestic happiness. From the outside, she seems destined to live a charmed life. Valerie Anderson is an attorney and single mother to six-year-old Charlie--a boy who has never known his father. After too many disappointments, she has given up on romance--and even to some degree, friendships--believing that it is always safer not to expect too much. Although both women live in the same Boston suburb, the two have relatively little in common aside from a fierce love for their children. But one night, a tragic accident causes their lives to converge in ways no one could have imagined. In alternating, pitch-perfect points of view, Emily Giffin creates a moving, luminous story of good people caught in untenable circumstances. Each being tested in ways they never thought possible. Each questioning everything they once believed. And each ultimately discovering what truly matters most.

Add a CommentHORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! read comments for love the one you're with. i threw this book down numerous times. the cold blatant writing like cheating is a joke is repugnant. i will no longer read her books. at the beginning they were good. these two much have been early ones. how did she get them printed?
I was disappointed in this novel. Was not a good read for me.
Just finished reading this novel again and I did find it a lot more interested 2nd time around. I don't know why I didn't enjoy it the first time. May 25, 2018
Such a great book- love it! All of emily giffins books are SPOT On!
A patron review from the Adult Summer Game: "This book dealt with some more serious subjects than some of Giffin's other novels. It was still a good read and interesting told from different character's points of view."
Probably my favourite Giffin book. The author does not shy away from tough subjects, and I really liked that not only did we hear of the affair from Valerie's side but also from Tessa's as well. It added much more dimension, and shows how far reaching the effects of an affair can be.
I usually love her books but I just couldn't like this one. The story line had a lot of plot holes. I felt that the affair came out of nowhere. Maybe if we could have seen it from the husband's point of view I would have felt different. Did not enjoy this book.
I have read countless books and this is by far my FAVORITE! The book is NOT predictable. Emily Giffin really got to me in this one. Im not sure why because im not married and don't have children but my heart really wen out to both these characters. This is a book that i could read over and over.
A story about infidelity. Husband is to blame of course. But it shares the perspectives of the wife and the other woman.
It takes love and sacrifice, from both the husband and wife to make it work.
I found Tessa's chapters more interesting.
People comparing Emily Giffin to a modern-day Jane Austen makes me cringe.
This was my favourite of Giffin's novels. I loved that the point of view varied between Tessa and Valerie. Both woman have Dr. Nick Russo in common yet the woman do not know one another. The book highlights there relationship with the Dr. I found all three characters likeable and I understood the motivations for each characters' actions.
