Apparently medieval nuns and monks had carte blanche to travel to their family homes, if they were needed. In this book, Eleanor, Prioress of Tyndal Abbey, takes Anne, the medical specialist from her abbey and Brother Thomas to her father's castle to help nurse her nephew back to health. During their stay, marriage negotiations are begun between their family and a neighboring one. It is obvious from the outset, that something is drastically wrong in the visiting family. Eleanor's brother, for whom the marriage is being arranged, is blamed when the brother of the prospective bride is killed. A servant of Eleanor's family is killed in an accident, their priest is almost killed, and the father of the prospective bride is attacked. It takes all the detective skills of Eleanor and Thomas to untangle the web of anger and retribution that has caused all this. It sounds gorey, but once again negotiation and psychology make this an intriguing puzzle rather than a blood and guts thriller.
