The phrase "Inspired by Homer's 'The Iliad'" appears at the closing credits of Director Wolgang Peterson's film but this movie is neither inspirational nor enjoyable so distorted is this movie from Homer's epic poem and its beautiful details. The Trojan War lasted ten years and The Iliad captures about 50 days at the end of the war. Peterson claims he has read The Iliad in several languages and loves this masterpiece (see Bonus section of DVD). He has an odd way of showing his artistic appreciation. The director and screenwriter made decisions to make their movie "better" and the result is a dismal failure. How do you improve The Iliad? The Greek Gods are laughing at this mortal arrogance. Take the flawed character of Achilles. Even though Brad Pitt captures the spirit and beauty of Achilles, the movie shows his naked body over and over at the expense of beautiful Achilles' drama. For example, In the epic poem Achilles weeps WITH Priam (Hector's father) and Hector's body was NOT returned to Priam unwashed in a dirty blanket. Anyone who knows the basic story of The Iliad will be very disappointed with this movie. Suggested alternatives: (1) TV version "Helen of Troy", (2) "The Iliad of Homer" and "The Odyssey" Great Courses set by Prof. Elizabeth Vandiver, and (3) "Famous Greeks" Great Courses set by Prof. J. Rufus Fears.

Worth watching for the battle sequences but otherwise mundane. They got blond haired Achilles's appearance right, unlike the BBC's recent neo Marxist crapsterpiece "Fall of Troy".

This is a 2004 American epic adventure drama directed by Wolfgang Petersen, loosely based on Homer's Iliad, though the film narrates the entire story of the decade-long Trojan War.
However, it is condensed into little more than a couple of weeks insead of the fight among Hector, Achilles and Agamemnon in the ninth year.
Played by Brad Pitt, Achilles leads his Myrmidons along with the rest of the Greek army invading the historical city of Troy.
According to the ancient story, the war originated from a quarrel between the goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite.
Unfortunately, however, none of these goddesses show up in the film.
Yet, it is an action-packed spectacle with great visial effects, thrills and splendour.

Brad Pitt and Eric Bana gave the best performance. Brad Pitt made his Achilles so stoic and still arrogant. Orlando Bloom also stood out. Another great classic!

I wanted to like the movie, but I really can't. The cinematography is lovely, but I cannot bring myself to care about any of the characters who all seem two-dimensional and cartoony.

Wonderful movies, great actors, and amazing extras!
Especially, I was so impressed by the performances of Brad Pitt and Eric Bana who played the role of Hector.
