80's Sci Fi Classic!!

Despite its age the underwater camera work in this film is still great to watch. The film reminds me of Close Encounter of The Third Kind, so there is a sci-fi element to it. The melodrame at the end of film is out of place, in my view. Without it the film could have been a much better thriller.

This is the first time I've never really been engaged by a James Cameron, who manages to cobble something interesting together onscreen. The Abyss was just a tad too clinical & scientific for me, lacking a compelling story or characters and instead focusing on gadgets and ships and dayglo aliens. Harris and Mastrantonio are great when together, but he's simple and she's shrill. Cameron crafts some compelling shots and stunts, but there's nothing here that engages beyond that.

the story of advanced aliens who threathen to destroy the human race unless we become their docile pets. and the protagonists grin idioticly at the situation.

Yep, finally saw this one. I enjoyed it, even Ed Harris as a leading man. A precursor to Cameron's AVATAR hit.

Longish ,.. but a good sci-fi yarn well spun. Some great acting, and awesome yet realistic underwater effects.

This is one of my favorite movies in my collection. And with a choice of the extended or theatrical version to choose from makes this a classic for my science fiction, horror section. This movie contains all around sound so it's important that you watch it on your HOMETHEATER. The visual water effects are fantastic along with the aliens, their ships, and the huge wave the aliens create and send towards land. The story is very good and the cast brings it to life. I prefered the extended version. With the additional 28 minutes added it makes the story whole in my opinion. The whole movie has great sound, but my favorite scene for audio is when the crane up top breaks free from it's base, falls into the ocean, and starts decending towards the main characters vessel below. I really like this film and give it 5 stars!!!! Excellent visual effects, good sound effects, very good cast, and a good story. Pepper steak, white rice, black beans and ice tea.

A little boring at parts. Not for little children because there are quite a lot of swear words in it. Otherwise it is a movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
