A groundbreaking guide to raising responsible, capable, happy kids

Based on the latest research on brain development and extensive clinical experience with parents, Dr. Laura Markham's approach is as simple as it is effective. Her message: Fostering emotional connection with your child creates real and lasting change. When you have that vital connection, you don't need to threaten, nag, plead, bribe--or even punish.

This remarkable guide will help parents better understand their own emotions--and get them in check--so they can parent with healthy limits, empathy, and clear communication to raise a self-disciplined child. Step-by-step examples give solutions and kid-tested phrasing for parents of toddlers right through the elementary years.

If you're tired of power struggles, tantrums, and searching for the right "consequence," look no further. You're about to discover the practical tools you need to transform your parenting in a positive, proven way.

I found the author's advice on her site so useful that I decided to buy her book. The premise to happier kids is to connect or bond emotionally first. All the advice I've read from her is so applicable to my circumstances (I have a preschooler and a toddler). I also appreciate that the book is not overly theoretical but rather is full of practical advice that I can use right away.

It's a great book that reminds you that your children learn by example, so if you learn to control your own "tantrums" then their behaviour will change as a result.

This book advocates a great approach to parenting generally: ask first not what is my kid doing wrong, but what can I do differently? Whenever I am going through a tough stage with my son(s), I reread this book. Crucially, it has taught me how to be an effective emotional coach, not just for my children but for my whole family.

Half way through "Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids," I looked up at my partner and said, "This book will change my life." Indeed, Laura Markham's book has the potential to profoundly change everyone's parenting through her three tenets: emotional regulation, connection and "coaching, not controlling."

From Markham's advice, you will learn to connect more with your children, to see the world from their perspective, to empathize with them and to regulate your own feelings so as to model healthy emotional responses. These tools will change your relationship with your children in such positive ways, namely more listening, more understanding and fewer meltdowns. Ultimately, Markham shows us a more effective way to guide and relate to our children than yelling or spanking. And fear not: peaceful parenting does not equal permissive parenting. Just give it a go.
