The title "below zero" appeared suddenly in the final pages of the book; and its tie-in to the story became immaterial almost as sudden. Often tedious and pointless twists slowed its pace so much that I almost gave up after a third in. A bit of editing would have done wonders to the story as the basic plot lines were very good.

Many reasons to like this one: Joe Pickett's eldest daughter, Sheridan, comes along on the mission; interesting family details about Marybeth, Lucy and April Pickett; Nate Romanowski plays a crucial role - I want to know more about him! - and Joe gets help from the FBI without compromising his principles.

This is somewhere around the eighth or ninth thriller by C.J.Box I've read and not one has been bad. How does he do it? I've read a lot of the mystery writers dotting the landscape these days and a lot of them have hit the wal and burst into flames! Sue Grafton, Michael Connelley, James Lee Burke, are unreadable and Robert Crais of late has been flirting the edge; Joseph Wambaugh is back on form after years of mediocrity or lassitude. But Box just keeps cranking out the good stuff! "Below Zero" is proof!

C. J. Box is one of my favorite authors for action novels. I have not read a bad or even mediocre one yet, and that includes BELOW ZERO. Again, he has come across with a new and interesting theme.

This was a random pick out from the library shelf. It is a mystery novel with a rural backdrop which is something I wouldn't normally read. Some of the author's other novels aluded to blood and gore but this one wasn't as graphic as I thought it would be, in fact on a par with any other novel in the genre. I will read another of the author's books.

Box missed the target with this installment in the Joe Pickett series. The story and characters didn't develop at an even pace and I was often reading chapters forward before anything really happens that advances the story to it's inevitable/predictable conclusion.

Good read and this is a new author for me. I will have to pick up some of his earlier books.
