The unwanteds takes place on an island known as Quill where creativity is illegal. Once a year every 13 year old is put into one of three categories. The wanteds, necessaries, and the creative unwanteds, who are killed. The story is based on twin brothers Alex and Aaron. Alex knows he will be unwanted and that Aaron will be wanted. But when Alex and the other unwanteds arrive at the lake of boiling oil they meet a magician named Mr.Today, who introduces them to the world of Artime.Throughout the book the Author switches between Alex and Aaron’s perspectives allowing the book to dive into the “good v.s evil” complex along with being a great coming of age story.

If you are looking for a book series that is similar to Harry Potter and Hunger games this series is for you. It has wonderful tales of adventure and mystery and is sure to be a fast favorite! I picked up this book because I thought the cover was cool and I have never regretted it. This book series made me want to read others like it and opened up a whole new world of books for me. I will always recommend this series to older elementary schoolers and middle schoolers as a book series that is sure to get you into reading.

The Unwanteds is a fantasy book series by Lisa Mcmann that takes place on the island of Quill where every year, 13 year olds are sorted into 3 groups; the wanteds, the necessaries, and the unwanteds. The wanteds are intelligent and strong, the unwanteds are creative and artistic, and the necessaries do manual labor. The wanteds go to university in quill, the necessaries do the manual labor, and the unwanteds are sent to their deaths. When the unwanteds get sent to their deaths however, a man named Mr. Today saves them and brings them to Artimee, a place magically disguised to help hide the creative children and help them learn magic. I enjoyed this book and would recommend this book to middle schoolers interested in fantasy fiction.

This is an incredible book and an amazing start to the whole series. I think the book's incredible and cant wait to read the whole series. I am right now in the middle of the second book, island of silence, which is just as amazing and incredible as the first. I totally recommend this book for harry potter fans and land of stories fans.

Overall, this is a great book and a great introduction to the Unwanteds series. The story starts with a boy that thinks that a painful death is approaching when in turn, something that will change his life forever happens. The only slightly disturbing thing about this book is the idea of a death farm with boiling oil that kills people. This is introduced at the beginning of the book. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book and I loved the whole series too. I would without question recommend this book to all of my friends and acquaintances because this book is for everyone.

I own this entire series and I've been rereading it!! It's taken me 4 days but it's worth it!!! 12+ In Quill creative die and intelligent strive. After all their motto is "Quill Prevails When the Strong Survive" Their culture is separated into 3 levels Wanteds get all the luxury and education they could ask for and successful jobs for the future. Necessaries spend their lives producing and caring for the Wanteds. And Unwanteds, the creative, die. Thrown into a lake of boiling oil. Alex Stowe is Unwanted he's known that since he was 10 so when he's 13 he'll be sent to his death. But his identical twin Aaron is a Wanted and lives as one of the most successful Wanted's of his generation. But when Alex doesn't die and a kindly mage named Mr.Today saves him and shows him the truth behind Quill and the power creativity has Alex wishes Aaron could share the good fortune. But Aaron can't know Alex and the other thousands of Unwanteds are alive and hiding in a secret land called Artime practicing magic! Otherwise it could start a war between the 2 countries! But Alex isn't sure he can resist, and he's not sure to what lengths Mr.Today will go to to keep everyone he loves out of harm. This 7 book series follows the adventures of these 2 boys and their lives in a backwards culture.

This book was great, I liked it better than Harry Potter actually! You will not be able to put this book down, it has some really good morals and encourages creativity. I liked how the kids got to make their own spell components, it made me want to be an Unwanted!

I absolutely loved this book and it is one of my favourites. I would definitely recommend this book to others. At first I did not like the look of the book because it was not what I typically read, but once I started it I was hooked, and I could not stop reading.
