Salem Hyde just isn't like other kids. For one thing, she's stubborn, independent, and impulsive. For another, she's a witch. Salem acts first and thinks later--which means most of her thinking involves coming up with excuses! Good thing she's been assigned an animal companion, Lord Percival J. Whamsford III. This over-anxious cat doesn't like Salem calling him "Whammy," and Salem doesn't like listening to his long-winded explanations as to why she shouldn't do something . . . like enter the class spelling bee. Salem knows she can beat all her classmates at spells, no problem. Too late, she realizes the competition is about spelling words, not magic. And there's nothing like a misspelled spell to cause all kinds of havoc! This reminds me a little of Calvin and Hobbes, Dragonbreath, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch rolled into one. A fun new graphic novel series for 2nd and 3rd graders.

Salem Hyde needs to learn that words matter. The lesson is a bit different in her case than for many kids, though, since Salem is a witch--her words can be spells when she wants, causing all kinds of magical effects. Since Salem is rash, independent, and proud, she usually spells before crafting her words carefully enough, causing all kinds of chaos and trouble. Her parents hire a tutor, but Salem doesn't need someone telling her what to do so much as she needs a friend.

A brief, approachable graphic novel that is fun and funny, perfect for early readers.
