“All right," Jake said, clapping his hands. "Which one of you little punks is gonna teach me how to play Chutes and Ladders?”
“We ate it like it was medicine. Like it was magic candy that could somehow restore us to a normal life again. We ate ourselves numb and got in our bags and went to sleep.
There was a lot of crying from the little kids and occasionally one of us would yell, "Shut up!"
That's how we got by, that first night.”
“I tell you, just when you think you know someone, she shows up looking pretty and carrying a guitar.”
“Your mother hollers that you're going to miss the bus. She can see it coming down the street. You don't stop and hug her and tell her you love her. You don't thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not- you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the corner.
Only, if it's the last you'll ever see your mother, you sort of start to wish you'd stopped and did those things. Maybe even missed the bus.
But the bus was barreling down our street so i ran.”
SummaryAdd a Summary
A group of kids take refuge in a superstore when the world is hit by natural disasters.
When unbelievably sized hail falls from the sky in the aftermath of a "megatsunami," students on school buses seek shelter from the storm in a superstore called Greenway. From the TV they find in the Media Department, the fourteen kids learn their lives will never be the same again. A chemical leak has occurred and it causes varying side-effects depending on the exposed person's blood type. The kids have to work together despite their differences to survive in Greenway. What can go wrong?
After an immense hail storm, many students find themselves alone in a grocery store while the world around them is coming to destruction
This book is very easy to describe. It's a mix of Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer and Trapped by Michael Northrop. If you mixed the two books together, you would make Monument 14 with one or two slight changes. It was definitely on the easy side for me, a sophomore, and it was a bit boring but it was okay.
Sexual Content: Several times a 13 year old girl, who wants to be older then she is, tries to seduce some High school guys and at one point she gets her shirt wet and they can see her breasts. At another point the main character accidentally witnesses a sex scene.
