From bestselling author Blue Balliett, the story of a girl who falls into Chicago's shelter system.

Where is Early's father? He's not the kind of father who you think would disappear. But he's gone. And he's left a whole lot of trouble behind.

It's not enough that Early can't find out what's happened to him. His vanishing leads to Early and her mom and her brother being kicked out of their apartment. Having nowhere else to go, they move into Chicago's shelter system. And from there, Early must start getting answers to her questions.

Because Early's father hasn't disappeared without a trace. There ARE traces. And Early's going to use them to track her father down... and make her way out of a very tough place.

"After her father disappears off the bitter cold streets of Chicago and a devastating break-in forces her family to move to a homeless shelter, bright, determined fifth-grader Early Pearl begins to suspect that the clues she needs to reunite her family are hidden in the Langston Hughes book her father left behind. Combining Blue Balliett’s distinctive brand of clever, complex mystery with the harsh but hopeful struggle of a loving family in a tough situation, this touching, compassionate novel is sure to captivate readers long after they've turned the last page." I loved this book, in the beginning, because the 4 member Pearl family is so lovingly drawn. They live in a one room apartment, but are so rich in love, imagination, curiousity and books. But, when the father, who is a library page, mysteriously disappears leaving the rest of the family homeless, the mystery doesn't hold together very well. It's still a good read for that closeness of family and, also, the picture of the family dealing with the stress of homelesssness and the world of shelters is very well done.
