Tragically even in the world of today, slavery still exists and wears many faces. FIVE THOUSAND YEARS OF SLAVERY provides the suspense and emotional engagement of a great novel. It is an excellent resource with a comprehensive historical narrative, firsthand accounts, maps, archival photos, paintings and posters, an index and suggestions for further reading. Much more than a reference work, it is a brilliant exploration of the worst - and the best - in human society.

I highly recommend this book which should be required reading in every high school. It is based on solid scholarly research and is written in an accessible style. It puts American slavery in a much-needed historical and world-wide context. Readers will learn that slavery has existed since ancient times and has been part of societies all over the world---in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. People of all races and ethnicities have been slaves at one time or another and it lasted in China, Africa and the Middle East well into the 20th century. It will all come as a revelation to most Americans.
