Legendary actor Charlie Chaplin stars as The Little Tramp who stumbles upon an abandoned baby in the alley and takes him into his care, in this landmark silent film. As "the kid" (Jackie Coogan) grows older, they become partners in crime, until one day when the child falls ill and hospital workers endeavor to take the boy away. One of the most famous silent films of all time -- and the first that Chaplin wrote and directed himself -- it is also regarded as the first-ever comedy-drama.

I never knew I could enjoy a silent black & white movie so much. I understand why Chaplin remains so beloved.

What can I say? Chaplin is a genius, and this has to be one of his greatest films, but I think lovers of Chaplin already know that.

Unlike other Chaplin movies that I've seen (Gold Rush, Modern Times, City Lights, Great Dictator) this silent film IS NOT FUNNY. Also, unlike the aforementioned, The Kid does not have any of the classic Chaplin "gags".

Maybe this one doesn't age as well as others because I found myself wondering if audiences from the 1920s laughed at certain scenes within. Specifically, the scene where the Tramp finds himself stuck with a newborn baby and contemplates, if only for a second, about dropping the child into the sewer; the scene where the entire community encourages a couple of 5 year-olds to fight each other like some kind of steel-cage-death-match; and, of course, the infamous rape scene. Also, the last 10 minutes is some kind of angels vs. demons, good vs. evil, tripped out dream sequence that doesn't seem to make sense or mesh with the rest of the movie. Very odd!

I am not a fan of silent movies -- except for anything with Charles Chaplin! A beautiful, moving, and funny film. Chaplin and Coogan are wonderful! It is a cliche to say it, but Chaplin really was a genius. This film is 95 years old, and Chaplin still touches us and makes us laugh!

A destitute single mother leaves her newborn in the back seat of an expensive-looking car hoping the owner will take pity on him. But, thanks to a series of misadventures, the baby winds up in the care of a kind-hearted vagrant who proceeds to raise the kid as best he can. Five years later the two are inseparable but the mother, now a famous actress (in only 5 years?) comes looking to reclaim the child she once gave up. Yes, this is a "Chaplin" classic...but only if you like Charlie Chaplin. Personally I find his affected "Little Tramp" persona more irritating than endearing rendering this 60-minute film one big melodramatic fairy tale, and not a particularly original one at that. Pint-sized Jackie Coogan certainly steals the show (apparently his big crying scene was aided in part by some nasty paternal threats) and the extremely old school production values do carry some charm. Perhaps it was the first of its kind but that doesn't make it the best.
