I like the book (and the series) so much! I would recommend for 6th graders and up, -maybe a mature 5th grade reader. Love the plot twists and exited to read the rest of the series.

grades 7-9

So, you pick up a book at the library, saying it looks good. You read it - and it was AWFUL.
You do not want to read this book. The wild tonal inconsistency makes it feel like you're reading a roller coaster bookified. Neria comes across as a jerk who didn't let everyone breathe underwater, Alithia at first says that Serafina isn't a... Merrovian (It sounds like a type of rover), but she goes back on it. Alithia is meant to be infallible. Astrid can't sing because her vocal chords got MOONCAKE in them right so she can't sing, but she can still speak (yes, you read that right). The puzzle ball, which was unsolved for hundreds of years, was solved by the protagonists. There's graphic depictions of flesh sewing together into tails after Dork Diary levels of SoL.

This book was amazing! At the beginning I didn't understand, but it excelled quickly with drama and romance.I loved it!It had me on edge....but I need to say....IT LEFT ON A CLIFFHANGER!I was so mad,so the next day I went directly to the library to get all the other books in the series. So worth it,I read it at nights, and felt so connected to the amazing characters. They all had such different personalities. Also let me just say the conflicts in these stories are so amazing!RECOMMEND 100%

I couldn't get into it. Fifty pages in and the story is still focused on the girl's relationships. It might be of interest to teenage girls, but not me.

This book was very magical and mythological. This is the first book in the WaterFire Saga series. In this book, the characters changed a lot. The main character, Serafina, started off as a know-it-all perfect princess who always listened to her mother. She was going to be the next ruler of Miromara and she had no complaints. Suddenly, everything changed in a heartbeat. On the day of Serafina's Dokimi(a festival where the next ruler of Miromara is declared capable of the throne), Serafina's mother, Queen Isabella got shot with a poisonous arrow. In a moment, Sera's life changed forever. With all the screaming and shouting, Serafina got away with the help of her best friend Neela. My favourite part in the book is when Neela is sewing new clothes for everyone as a new disguise. That's when Neela gets a different feeling that I can perfectly connect to. She thinks about her journey and everything they have been through. She thinks about who she was and who she is. Although this was a very small part, it really helped me as a reader think about how a situation can change so fast. This book also has a lot of new characters that are introduced throughout the story. This book is very suspenseful and interesting. The ending made me feel both mad and happy at the same time because it ended as a cliff hanger. The good thing is that I knew that there will be another book coming out soon. This book to read was really fun to read and I would recommend it. Rating- 5/5

Oddly enough, I read the second book before this one so I already knew a lot of what was happening before I even opened it. I probably should not have done that. In doing so, I found a lot of the story to be less dramatic than it should have been. But for a normal reader, I would suggest an age of ten to twelve to enjoy the book and for reading level. For me, I should have read this a long time ago but I guess late is better than never. At least now I can move onto book three without too much confusion. The whole mermaid plot is actually very interesting when you consider how much imagination must have gone into creating the themes. Each of the characters have their own traits and flaws that make them very real and relatable. 4.5/5 stars.

Serafina is the princess of Miromara, the most ancient underwater civilization where merfolk resides. Serafina feels burdened by the pressures and responsibilities that come with being royalty. On the same day she is tested to see if she is worthy of the throne and being married to Prince Mahdi, her precious mother is brutally attacked. Now on the run, she listens to her strangely vivid dreams that foretell an oracle and search across the sea to find five other mermaids who are the only hope of defeating the mysterious evil in her waters. I really enjoyed this book and the concept is engaging and whimsical. This novel did a really good job of making me immersed in a fictional realm because of the attention to detail and the developed history. However, I feel like the pacing was slow at times and it wasn’t as intense as I would have liked. Nevertheless, the characters were diverse and unique and I fell in love with all of them. 'Magic depended on so many things-the depth of one's gift, experience, dedication, the position of the moon, the rhythm of the tides, the proximity of the whales. it didn't settle until one was fully grown; Serafina knew that. But she needed it know, and she prayed to the gods that it would be."
