Wonderful writing. Amusing, entertaining, educative.

A very accessible look at a part of English history from a great writer - London in the 1600's through the eyes of Robert Merivel, a patchy character who falls in and out of favour with Charles 11. A great insight into the lives of commoners and royalty at the time, all living in and around the seething pot of London when the Great fire breaks out.

A fantastic study of the evolution and development of a vain and shallow man into a decent human being - with a few hiccups along the way. A lovely read.

I generally don't like books written in the first person, but this was the exception. Rose Tremain does an amazing job of making you care about an otherwise not very likable main character ... I could not put this book down!

Not surprising it was short listed for the Booker Prize in 1990.

This is a book, where even if you are a plot hound, you will cannot help but notice how wonderfully it is written.
