By the time of his early death in 1988, Raymond Carver had established himself as one of the great practitioners of the American short story, a writer who had not only found his own voice but imprinted it in the imaginations of thousands of readers. Where I'm Calling From , his last collection, encompasses classic stories from Cathedral , What We Talk About When We Talk About Love , and earlier Carver volumes, along with seven new works previously unpublished in book form. Together, these 37 stories give us a superb overview of Carver's life work and show us why he was so widely imitated but never equaled.

A classic. Some stories are from other collections. A master of short story writing.

An outstanding collection of short stories. Carver is a master of the genre, realistically capturing the minute details of the trials and tribulations of human relationships as well as individuals' feeble and unsuccessful attempts to find happiness through self-medication.

I slogged through half of this story collection before giving up. I only liked 1 or 2 of the stories, and even then Carver's style did not resonate with me. Many of his characters seemed too unreal, and their frequent naivete was annoying. I consider myself a fairly open-minded reader, but the seeming randomness of where his stories start and where they end just did not work for me.
