"First comes the day
Then comes the night.
After the darkness
Shines through the light.
The difference, they say,
Is only made right
By the resolving of gray
Through refined Jedi sight."

- Journal of the Whills, 7:477

* Excellent opening line: "She needed him. And he was nowhere to be found." It piques my interest.

* The book has additional scenes & background info that the movie lacked.

* Reading the book cleared up a few of the smaller questions that I had. (Of course, the larger questions remain, keeping me eager for the sequel.)

The Force Awakens novelization by Alan Dean Foster is a beautifully written and engaging book which adds more depth to the film, 'The Force Awakens.' It follows the perspectives of Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Han Solo, Leia Organa, and Kylo Ren as they carry out their missions: either to destroy or help the Resistance in their search for the missing Luke Skywalker. Personally, I enjoyed the book more than the film--the characters are given a more developed and intriguing side to their point of view--more so on paper--Alan Dean Foster brings them to life, painting their personalities and motives more vividly. I had a hard time putting it down. I highly recommend this book for Star Wars fans and sci-fi readers. I give this book an 8 out of 10. - @papertiger of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

An exciting version of an early script from "The Force Awakens". The book differs slightly from the movie, but gives some interesting insight to characters' actions and a couple of "bonus" scenes not in the film. A nice adaption from Alan Dean Foster.

When you read SW fiction by someone like Claudia Gray, you know how good SW fiction can be. This, unfortunately, is a really disappointing adaptation of the movie, with little description or real insight into the characters. And anyone who pens the phrase: "Alone in the room, Kylo Ren-saturnine of aspect, lithe of build, tortured of mien and troubled of eye-gazed at the silent recipient of his confession"....really should be forced to read all of Danielle Steel's books as punishment. Because that's a sad excuse for writing, as is much of this book. Loved the movie, but I wish this novel had been better.

Solid adaptation by veteran Alan Dean Foster. There aren't many extra "scenes" in this, and some bits of the film are glossed over rather quickly. Still, fans won't have to wait long to see the filmed scenes that were cut from the film. The pacing picked up rapidly as is went, and the last third galloped along almost like an editor got a bit too busy.

Absolutely fantastic-- being a Star Wars take it from me, it's the best SW film since the originals. Acting is great. Special effects are outstanding. J.J. abrahms did a amazing job with this film. I cried at least 3 parts in the film. Best film of 2015 other than The Revenant which I would say was the best film of 2015. Enjoy!

Let's say, hypothetically, that it's the beginning of your epic space adventure. You want to drop the audience into the middle of things. Do you, say...spend a paragraph describing weird alien birds for no reason? No? Yeah, that's why I couldn't get past the introduction.
