A must read for rebal girls!

Jun 06, 2015

I didn't know if the books in the Far Out Fairy Tales series would be well-done, or churned out to make a buck. I was pleasantly surprised!

Cinderella, in this incarnation, is raised by her father in a Japanese-inspired cultural setting. (Her father looks white, her mother has blue eyes but dark hair, so I'm not sure if we've just dropped a white family into this or what's going on. Would definitely have been cooler with some undeniably diverse characters here.)

Her mother's passing, which happens on the second page, is surprisingly touching given how little time we've spent with the characters thus far. It amazes me how much impact a couple of comic panels can have in the right hands, and props to Comeau and Lozano for their strong start. After her mother dies, the story proceeds with a similar structure as the classic tale - except that Cinderella continues her martial arts training, and insists on being called Ninja-Rella. Her dream, rather than finding true love, is to get a job as a bodyguard.

I love Lozano's jewel tones, elaborate costumes, and animation-style character design. Comeau tells Ninja-Rella's story with heart and energy. As a result, I'm trading this back and forth with my seven year old son.
