This is a delightfully fast paced romp through just-barely-pre-prohibition era, where the jazz is loud, the skirts and hair are short, and the gangsters are running through the streets of Boston. The settings are divine. It's a highly visual tale that drags its readers into its history, and it isn't afraid to throw some fast and hard punches at its readers. It also is one of the best diverse-cast books I read in 2016, playing gently with some interesting ideas that, without the magic or the historical setting, could be right at home in a contemporary tale. It's not perfect: the protags are kind of interchangeable, and the plot goes from nothing happening to too much happening back to nothing happening in the flip of a page, and there's NO magic explanation whatsoever, but it's a fun read and it raises some questions about race, morals, and values that are always worth discussing.

If you're at all into creepy evil asylums, sneaky ensemble con jobs, or excellent female friendships, this book might just be the perfect fit. Neatly plotted with wonderful characters and a fantastic magic system, it was a great read. The world-building is vivid and the story has plenty of twists, so even if you see where a few are going, there's bound to be one or two that you guess incorrectly. And it's a stand-alone! Basically, grab this up right now.

A unique story set in the 1920s but sluggish, slow pacing dull the spectacular it could have been.
