Nocturnal Animals

Susan is living through an unfulfilling marriage when she receives a package containing a novel manuscript from her ex-husband, Edward. The novel is dedicated to her but its content is violent and devastating. Susan cannot help but reminisce over her past love story with the author. Increasingly she interprets the book as a tale of revenge, a tale that forces her to re-evaluate the choices that she has made, and reawakens a love that she feared was lost.

Great acting. Keeps you wondering how this story fits together, got it at the end.

Can't recommend unless you have nothing to redeeming value.

Saw this in the cinema with a friend. We both felt "mind-raped" by it, the storyline is urbanite protagonists indulge in some road rage and get tortured and raped violently by rural locals in response, and in the aftermath divorce and treat each other horribly also. Save yourself the emotional mauling and avoid this stinker. It should come with a stronger warning about the content .

Like designer turned director Tom Ford's first film, "A Single Man," "Nocturnal Animals" is very pretty and very boring, even if it's sort of a thriller. There's a double narrative that hangs together loosely and a lot of good actors with not a lot to do. Michael Shannon's Texas sheriff is the best part of the movie. I think it's a little body shaming to call the first five minutes disgusting. Also, there were no nocturnal animals-no bats, no owls, nothing-in this film. Rip off.

Left you hanging. Very odd

I watched this awhile ago and maybe I missed the first 5 minutes because I don't remember the disgusting horror others report. I do however remember the toilet scene, and I LOVED it, total perfection in my mind.

It is just as well that the director, in the bonus material, explains what the movie is all about, because the two stories do not mesh as well as he would have us believe. The inside story, from the novel, is a very conventional tale of back country violence. The framing story is far more interesting, but not in the way the director intended. The upscale LA society is so well portrayed that with some expansion it would make an excellent satire of modern life. The sets, the costumes and the cinematography are so magnificent that they steal the attention from the drama. Nevertheless, the film works best as a portrait of a lonely woman, punctuated by a very appropriate ending.

- No, we're not perfect for each other, Edward. We may be perfect for each other if we didn't live in the real world, but I live in the real world and I need a life that is more structured. I need a future that is more structured.
-I want to be the person that you want me to be, but I just can't.
You are. You are.
- I can't be that.
Hey, no, stop.
-I, I really wanted to be this person that you thought I was, I really did, but I'm just not that person. I'm, I'm cynical, I'm pragmatic.
No, look...
-No, I am. I'm a realist.
You're afraid. You're afraid.
-No, I'm not afraid.
We've been through this so many times before.
- I'm not scared. I'm not scared. I'm unhappy. All right. I'm just really, really unhappy. You're so... You really are so wonderful and you're just so sensitive and romantic and...
Weak. That's right, yeah.
- What? I did not say you were weak.
You've said it so many times before.
- I did not call you weak.
You've said it before, so why don't you say it again? Weak.

Susan, keep seeing him if you have to, live with him, I don't care, but do not marry him. I understand what you see in Edward. I get it. ... He is a romantic. But he is also very fragile. I saw that when his father died. Don't... Don't do this. You'll regret it. And you'll only hurt Edward in the end. The things you love about him now are the things you'll hate in a few years. You may not realize it, but you and I are a lot more alike than you think.
- No. You're wrong. You and I are nothing alike.
Really? Just wait. We all eventually turn into our mothers.
Well, when you love someone, you work it out. You don't just throw it away. You have to be careful with it. You might never get it again.
-I can't do this with you anymore, Edward. I just can't keep doing this.
Susan... You can't just walk away from things all the time.

My ex-husband used to call me a nocturnal animal.

Why are you so driven to write?
-I guess it's a way of keeping things alive. You know, saving things that will eventually die. And if I write it down, then, it'll last forever.

You sound like your mother.
-Well, you always said that I reminded you so much of her, so... You know, this is exactly why I don't wanna read your work because you always get so fxcking defensive.
Yeah, of course I'm defensive! Do you know what it feels like to put yourself out on the line creatively and then have someone you love tell you that they don't understand it?
-No, I don't, because I'm not creative...
That's because you choose not to be.
