A Man Called Ove
Audiobook CD - 2014 | Unabridged
There is something about Ove. At first sight, he is almost certainly the grumpiest man you will ever meet. He thinks himself surrounded by idiots -- neighbours who can't reverse a trailer properly, joggers, shop assistants who talk in code, and the perpetrators of the vicious coup d'etat that ousted him as Chairman of the Residents' Association. He will persist in making his daily inspection rounds of the local streets. But isn't it rare, these days, to find such old-fashioned clarity of belief and deed? Such unswerving conviction about what the world should be, and a lifelong dedication to making it just so?

I listened to the audio version of this book. I loved it! It was quite different than anything else I've read. I loved the seeming evolution of the crusty old guy and then discovering what was behind his actions and what he was really like all along. The cast of characters was just that...quite the cast of characters.
Exceptional!
What a delight!! Read the book then see the film!! Highly recommend!! Kristi & Abby Tabby
“Ove is fifty-nine,” begins the New York Times bestselling novel.
Written by Fredrik Backman, a Swedish author, this book may be what propelled him to worldwide fame. It might not seem so at first, but this novel, written and arranged carefully, is a masterpiece of humor, anger, and philosophical observations on life and death, following the life of Ove, a cranky, perfectionistic man living alone.
Fastidious Ove is a man who “sees the world in black and white.” Perhaps, then, it will startle readers when a scene opens with him attempting to hang himself—in his own living room, at that. Annoyingly enough, this attempt fails. Furthermore, he gains new neighbors, the two young daughters of whom bring him food because he “looked hungry.”
So Ove’s life—and his story—continues, told in a simplistic, sarcastic style, yet perfectly capturing moments of genuine warmth and emotion within the old man. He’s certainly selfish, impolite, and miserly, but despite this character, he’s certainly not lacking in lovable qualities or a personal painful life story, either: you will get to know him as I did as you read this book. Prepare to laugh, and perhaps, to shed a few tears.

like life learning lessons from this book
Great book and writing about an older man who thinks he needs to commit suicide to be with his wife; the love of his life who has already passed. But life takes him in a different direction. Great narration as an audio book.
A perfect blend of humor and heartache, A Man Called Ove was just the story I needed. I've had it on my to-read list for a long time now and when I finally started listening, the timing was perfect.
Not only is it a well crafted story in its own right, if you are a DIY type person or have someone in your life who is mystified by people who aren't inclined to learn how to change a tire or "fix a thing" ... this is the book for you. I laughed all the way through this, because I heard the familiar voices of friends and family in Ove's gripes and complaints. The characters are fantastic - especially Parvaneh... and the cat.
What a crotchety old man! I love him. Reminds me of my grandfather in many, and often uncomfortable, ways.
I feel like each of us knows somebody like Ove—a headstrong elder from an earlier generation who's hopelessly out-of-sync with the modern ways of the world. But with age comes wisdom, only this wisdom is buried beneath a shell that's been hardened from a lifetime of experiences.
Give this book a try. You'd have to be far crotchetier than Ove not to be moved by his story.
What a lovely story to remind readers that hope and purpose can reappear, even in the face of overwhelming grief, and that each of us can make positive differences in others' lives. Heartwarming, funny, sweet and life-affirming.
