This was one of the most difficult reads I have encountered to date. I ended up skimming through the book because it was too time-consuming to read all the text. There is extreme detail, distracting side stories, many musings, and repetition galore. The text is very folksy and written as though for a screenplay at times, but the story itself is interesting. I would much prefer being able to read a Reader's Digest version, though, and I would guess that it would be one quarter of the current text.

For those who would like to practise speed-reading, this would be a wonderful book.

No doubt the author has been wholeheartedly dedicated to the study of Maud and her times, convincingly expert, supported by volumes of correspondence and interviews. A lot of conjecture and musings to the point of distraction at times. The writing style is most annoying for it’s repetitiveness. An informative but frustrating read.

Some good new information, but it is very repetitive. Some of the neighbour quotes are repeated 2-10 times. ~10 of the pages are embedded advertisements for other books by LW, many of which have nothing to do with Maud Lewis.
