"Worlds collide when a naïve young heiress takes a tumble for a bootlegger with a murderous temper and his business partner falls in love with Montreal, the way Americans are prone to do. One world war has ended and a second is in the wings. In the space between, the neon-powered city on the St. Lawrence is notorious for its lavish nightlife, obsessive gambling and evident corruption."-- Provided by publisher.

This author again captures time and place through characters and story immersed in the language and mores of that time and place. In his Walt Whitman's Secret, it was the American Civil War. Here it is the casual underworld of American prohibition years, seen through the eyes of characters along the bootlegging pipeline between northern American cities and the brightly lit, profiteering environment of Montreal. Carpenter is the best pronunciation Americans can manage for Monsieur Charpentier, who tutors small time American mobsters who come to him for supplies and advice.

The writing style reflects the jargon of the time and depicts characters and events with bouncing humor.
