#1 bestselling author John Grisham's The Reckoning is his most powerful, surprising, and suspenseful thriller yet.

"A murder mystery, a courtroom drama, a family saga... The Reckoning is Grisham's argument that he's not just a boilerplate thriller writer . Most jurors will think the counselor has made his case."
-- USA Today

October 1946, Clanton, Mississippi

Pete Banning was Clanton, Mississippi's favorite son--a decorated World War II hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning he rose early, drove into town, and committed a shocking crime. Pete's only statement about it--to the sheriff, to his lawyers, to the judge, to the jury, and to his family--was: "I have nothing to say." He was not afraid of death and was willing to take his motive to the grave.

In a major novel unlike anything he has written before, John Grisham takes us on an incredible journey, from the Jim Crow South to the jungles of the Philippines during World War II; from an insane asylum filled with secrets to the Clanton courtroom where Pete's defense attorney tries desperately to save him.

Reminiscent of the finest tradition of Southern Gothic storytelling, The Reckoning would not be complete without Grisham's signature layers of legal suspense, and he delivers on every page.

The second part of the book (The Boneyard) was completely irrelevant to the main story. A historical novella sandwiched between 2 cohesive installments. What's the point? What is Grisham trying to impart?

No, not a good book for the "name" Grisham. So disappointed

The book was really good for the first part, but the second part was historical in nature and third back to the story.
Overall, this book was not uplifting and on thinking the plot over after I finished the book, it was a story about a self-centred white farmer who dominated his family and in the end it led to the demise or his family.
Originally, I would have rated it higher but the last two thirds of the book disappointed me.

This was one of his best books I have read and I am sure I have not missed one. There was a twist to the ending loved it

This is a sad and depressing story.

The middle third of the book is a history lesson on the human experience during the Bataan Death March.

I really don't understand the bad reviews (below). I think this is a really good read. I think the war was a bit long, but I enjoyed the story.

Had to sit on this review for a few days. Part 1 I thought it was going to be a 5 star rating and then Part 2 I couldn't understand some of the comments until halfway through Part 2 and I started to understand. Then it seemed to pick up a bit and then I found it disappointing.

I don't understand all the naysaying about this book. I admit it's been years since I've read a John Grisham but I felt that this book was very provoking, although towards the middle I thought that it was being dragged out too long. And that's because the ending was so unexpected and startling. I'd recommend it.

worst Grisham book ever.
total waste of time.
Would offer a full review but for two things
this book doesn't deserve the effort, and to explain fully why the book sucks would take a spoiler.
the 1st third is pretty good, the 2nd third is completely pointless and should have been it's own book, and the 3rd part of the book he mailed it in and ended with a stupid plot resolution.

juts garbage. gave it one star only for the opening third of the book.
