A charming, picturesque story that follows the life of a lighthouse keeper and his family who live inside a lighthouse. Full of historical facts and colorful illustrations, this book reads like a song, using repetition and rhythm to take the reader on a journey through the literal and metaphorical seasons of a lighthouse keeper’s life. How do they get their food? What happens when there is a storm? Or a shipwreck? Steeped in history and adventure, this melodic story is a great read for the whole family.

This is a delightful book. My 5 year old granddaughter and I have read it many times, enjoying the story, and finding more in the illustrations each time.

Blackall has really outdone herself with these lavish illustrations. I love the treatment of sea and sky, especially the sea. The story itself is bittersweet and will resonate more with adults. After following a lighthouse keeper and his family through the years, the oil lamp is replaced by an electric light, emptying the lighthouse of life. She includes a history of lighthouses and details on the daily tasks of keeping them.

A lovely, poignant book to savor. The cutaway illustration that shows lighthouse life is enchanting. Filled with interesting facts and compelling details this is a book that will have kids and grown-up readers saying "again."
