Add a CommentI'm a Mamoa gal but this film just doesn't make the cut. Dreary from the get-go it doesn't loosen up. Too many amateur film-makers think that this technique ups the tension. It exhausts the audience right away. Downer is downer any way you look at it.
This is a "variations on a theme" movie--the theme: innocent family gets caught up in drug smuggling (How? Typically, left "holding the bag" so to speak--a bag of drugs.)
So, you've got to have some kind of interesting angle on this to get people to pay attention at all. The script-writer tried--some interesting family dynamics here--but not hard enough. Worse, the director compounded the problem with inattention to detail. Wouldn't have cost anything to take care of that--handle it in dialogue, for Pete's sake--but no. So it's true: "little things mean a lot" and the little things that the director and/or writer didn't take care of continued to bug me until...
I turned it off about 30 minutes in.
Too bad. Some nice performances. But, wasted. Well, they got paid. Nobody paid me for wasting 30 min. of my time!
It's all been done before in much more thrilling & original fashion. Momoa is no acting legend, but I agree with another commenter that even he is wasted in this film. The villains lacked real bite (and it's the villains that make a movie like this), and I found myself forwarding through scenes which were intended to be suspenseful. If you want a better film about a man willing to defend his family against all odds, try Bone Tomahawk.
It's weird to say this, but, Jason Momoa's acting abilities are wasted in this otherwise worthless Action movie.
It has scores of moments that range anywhere from ridiculous right down to completely absurd.
Absolute garbage.
Not bad. 'Aquaman' fights bad guys in the cold.
Was it a good movie? No. Was it a fun movie? Yes. Hey it's free at the library, give it a chance.
Message is don't mess with the tough logging Braven family who are capable and prepared to fend off intruders in their lives. While the script was about a take-no-prisoner invasion of a remote cabin, the actions are so-so and the few twists seem manufactured. Nonetheless, give the actors and crew the stars for filming in the wintry Newfoundland, Canada.
Only made it through 15 minutes or so of this. Although it appears some people know who this Mamoa guy is, I have never heard of him. If you like action films, I guess you will like this one. I don't and I didn't. If we were in the 60's, this one would have been the late show out at the drive-in on the highway.
Hallmark Christmas movie must be jealous over the amount of real snow scenes In this movie. I liked the story of the family man defending his family against the brutal drug dealers. The father's dementia was presented well, and the little daughter was adorable, and spunky.
I too viewed this with low expectations, however felt it was pretty good story and some decent acting, although some very typical shallow character "bad" drug dealers.
Watching Jason Momoa (Conan the Barbarian: 2011; Justice League; 2017), with some more acting range, was nice to see, as was for Stephen Lang (Avatar: 2009; Don't Breathe: 2016) - although maybe all not that much range.
Special features had 10 minutes of interviews with the actors and talked about filming in cold Newfoundland.
