Watch it. 6 stars. Title is actually "Out of the Nothing". Btw, english book titles (but not film titles) get translated to German very literal. The Germans are very literal. Very. Serious. 6 stars.

The good: I learned that, if the film is accurate, in Germany a victim of a crime is considered a co-plaintiff and can participate fully in the prosecution at trial with her own attorney. And if you are acquitted of a crime in Germany then the state pays your attorney's fees and compensates you for any time you spent in jail. It would be great to see these policies considered for enactment in the US.

The not-so-good: Methinks, given how Katja, an ethnic German, and Nuri, a Kurdish-German, meet and marry and, especially, how the films ends, if an ethnic German had written this script then it is quite likely she would be publicly vilified as a racist and an Islamophobe. Then, too, there's the drug dispensing lawyer character, Danilo Fava, also an immigrant or child of immigrants.

In sum, in this film Turkish-German writer-director-producer Fatih Akin seems to be playing out—not critiquing—his own sort of depraved fantasy that mirrors neo-Nazi tropes about immigrants to Germany. Akin's deliberate usage of menstruation as a signifier in the film is very disturbing. To be clear, I am not bothered by menstruation being in the film. What I find disturbing is how Akin fits it into the plot.

Consider the source: In 2006, Akin was investigated by German officials for wearing a "BU卐H" [sic] t-shirt to protest the person and/or policies of US President George W. Bush. Nietzsche's warning comes to mind: "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster ... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you."

Very well acted by Kruger. The ending was unexpected.

Dialogue all in German so I had to read the subtitles through the whole movie. Yet I was fully enthralled. This is one of the better movies I've seen so far. Story, directing and acting were all excellent. There is always something 'real' about European movies and this one is no different. The ending was a little surprising, but that's what made this movie so good. Nothing really predictable; anti-Hollywood. Great movie. I highly recommend it.

I was interested through most of the film...until the ending, which was a big disappointment.

So, Diane Kruger won a "Golden Globe" for her portrayal of a vengeful wife of a murdered scuzz-ball Turkish immigrant and their "Dondi" son. All the "acting" in the world can't save this one from it's pathetic script. Despite lots of tattoos and dope ingesting, the one-dimensional script declares her as a heroine as pure as the blown snow. For the proper treatment of this sort of material see Ivan Passer's "Cutter's Way" or William Richert's "Winter Kills".

I hate to say this cause I am usually pretty good at remembering what I watched. I actually had to read the summary because I don't remember a thing about this film! So, Just to be fair I am not going to rate this one. Check it out at your own caution... And let me know how it went.

SPOILER ALERT:

Final calling card:

Between 2000 and 2007 in German, the “National Socialist Underground” shot nine people from immigrant backgrounds and a policewoman and carried out multiple bombings. The sole motive behind their attack was their victims’ non-Germans origin.
