I read this for the "A Book Published In 2019" part of my 2019 reading challenge. I found it started a little slow, but Jude and Cardan were fantastic together and I was really surprised by the ending.

Holly Black is truly a magical genius. Every aspect of The Wicked King (as well as it's predecessor, The Cruel Prince) is finely crafted: the characters are all complex with unique personalities, the plot is full of unexpected twists and turns, and the world of Faerie is described in vivid detail for a completely immersive experience. I highly recommend the audiobooks, as the narrator Caitlin Kelly is fantastic! She seamlessly creates distinct voices for each character and puts so much emotion into her narration. Warning: the cliffhanger at the end is a killer. Now to wait for the final book, The Queen of Nothing, to be released... Oh, the agony!

What I like about what Holly Black is doing with this series is that we as the readers do not get what we want, or at the very least what we expect. We expect the romance, we expect it to overcome obstacles and other desires, and we expect it to be the forefront of the story. And while the love story is still part of the plot, it's not what drives it forward.

It's a great take, and it leaves you frustrated. The cliffhanger at the end of this book is enraging because I have to wait for the release of the next before I find out what happens and that is still months away. BUT what this book does is show growth in the characters. They are all changing from the people they were in The Cruel Prince in very interesting ways. Some not as much as others, and if I could get into Cardan's head, I'd be very, very happy because he intrigues me so.

I love and adore the faerie world Holly has created here, and think that this was an excellent installment in the series. A good link between the first and the third. One that shows that even if you win the first time, you might not come out on top the next.

Dark and full of intrigue, the Wicked King is not something you'll put down easily. It kept me guessing till the end. I still hated Jude's romance with Cardan, but whatever.

The second book in the Folk of the Air series by Holly Black, The Wicked King is shorter than I would have thought it would be, but the words that lay within doesn't have to be long enough for me to be completely enthralled in the world again. After reading the first book, I wouldn't of thought that it could've gotten better, but the second book in this series reaches limits that I didn't think could be reached. It is darker and the character’s actions are more dangerous than ever. And with the last book being titled what it is, by the end of the book, I now understand the name. If you were weary after finishing the first book, The Wicked King will reinstate your hope for the series and Holly Black’s writing. 5/5 Stars. @SeraphinaWilliams of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

The Wicked King is the fantastic sequel to The Cruel Prince and another exhilarating book from Holly Black. With the first book, I really enjoyed that Holly Black wrote the characters to do the things a reader would love most and not just the most common pathway taken for the usual situation. It’s impossible to know what will happen with these books and I love that. I can’t recommend this series enough for a great read and I’m going to spend the whole of this year looking forward to the third book, The Queen of Nothing.

I love Holly Black's weird, dark fairy courts, and this is a great middle installment for a trilogy.

Holy shit, what the f-ck.

When is the next book coming out? I need to know how this ends right now.

Tbh, I’m not even sure we’re going to get our HEA. Tbh, I’m not even sure I want that. All I know is that I want Jude to get a flame thrower and raze Faerie down to the ground.

In a world with stunning and conniving faeries, Jude must always stay one step--no, ten steps--ahead. Will Jude's humanity be her downfall...or her salvation?

Holly Black has, yet again, created a dark and intoxicating story filled with political intrigue and dangerous beauty. I liked this book for a number of reasons. First, the enemies-to-lovers (or should I say "enemies while lovers") relationship between Jude and Cardan had me on the edge of my seat. You could cut the (sexual) tension and witty banter with a knife...or sword! Second, the world of Faerie was skillfully expanded through Jude's experiences with the Elfhame and the Undersea courts. Third, the pace slowly picked up, eventually leading to engaging twists and turns (that had me feeling slightly manipulated, but in a good way). And that ending... Well, lets just say I can't wait to see if my theory will prove true in The Queen of Nothing.

If you enjoyed The Cruel Prince, you'll love The Wicked King.

Just as twisty and darkly romantic as the first book in this planned trilogy, The Wicked King is fairy telling at its finest. Holly Black builds a world beautifully while enticing you to stay up late into the night to rush to the conclusion of this installment. Definitely a must-read if you enjoyed The Cruel Prince.

"The three of you have one solution to every problem. Murder. No key fits every lock.” Cardan gives us all a stern look, holding up a long-fingered hand with my stolen ruby ring still on one finger. “Someone tries to betray the High King, murder. Someone gives you a harsh look, murder. Someone disrespects you, murder. Someone ruins your laundry, murder."
