I've always enjoyed this one, a classic mid'60's "existential" western. Warren Oates, Millie Perkins & Jack Nicholson all give good performances & the story, while a bit odd, is compelling. Watch if you have an opportunity!

Not only the first "acid western" but Monte Hellman's "The Shooting" is one of the greatest existentialist films ever made and probably the greatest American existential film. As well as one of the greatest westerns also. Add to that mix Jack Nicholson and the hugely talented Warren Oates and this is a film that is a must see.
Ride the Whirlwind is good.

Two films, THE SHOOTING and RIDE THE WHIRLWIND, from 1966 that merit Criterion status I suppose because THE SHOOTING was lauded in Europe as a work of art. That it is because it manages to hold the viewer's attention without the viewer knowing exactly what is going on. The Carole Eastman script is topnotch, particularly the lines of the Coley character, brilliantly portrayed by Will Hutchins. Much is made of the fact that THE SHOOTING features a pre-celebrity Jack Nicholson. But Warren Oates, Millie Perkins and Hutchins carry the picture. RIDE THE WHIRLWIND is a much more conventional Western and showcases the screenwriting talents of a young Nicholson. It is a good film. The idea is maybe the white hats are worse than the black hats, or, "What color is your hat if you get sucked into a fight between the two?"

This is a double feature of two Monte Hellman/ Jack Nicholson Westerns. They're both good and are slight departures from the genre.

The Shooting -This revenge western film stars Warren Oates, who at this time is a fully developed actor. Jack Nicholson is also in this film, but he does not really get much opportunity to demonstrate acting. In three years though, with Easy Rider and Five Easy Pieces, Nicholson was one of those actors where you looked forward to each new picture. Ride in the Whirlwind - Jack Nicholson and Cameron Mitchell play cowpokes mistaken for stagecoach robbers being chased by a gang of vigilantes. Nicholson, this time in a starring role, shows some chops. In just three years, he would get his first Oscar nomination for his supporting role in Easy Rider.
