From the New York Times bestselling author of The Café by the Sea—whose novels are "an evocative, sweet treat" (JOJO MOYES)—comes this heartwarming holiday novel set on a charming Scottish island. On the remote Scottish island of Mure, the Christmas season is stark, windy, and icy—yet incredibly festive and beautiful...It's a time for getting cozy in front of whisky barrel wood fires, and enjoying a dram and a treacle pudding with the people you love—unless, of course, you've accidentally gotten pregnant by your ex-boss, and don't know how to tell him. In the season for peace and good cheer, will Flora find the nerve to reveal the truth to her nearest and dearest? Will her erstwhile co-parent Joel think she's the bearer of glad tidings—or is this Christmas going to be as bleak as the Highlands in midwinter? Meanwhile Saif, a doctor and refugee from war-torn Syria is trying to enjoy his first western Christmas with his sons on this remote island where he's been granted asylum. His wife, however, is still missing, and her absence hangs over what should be a joyful celebration. Can the family possibly find comfort and joy without her?Travel to the beautiful northern edge of the world and join the welcoming community of Mure for a Highland Christmas you'll never forget!

Somehow Jenny Colgan writes sad, but happy books and happy but sad books, always managing to break our hearts while uplifting them at the same time.

Christmas on the Island at first feels a little bit like her last book, as Joel struggles with his past. And like the last book, the town of Mure and the family of families that inhabit it rescue him and each other. It's beautifully done and more beautifully written.

Do not care for the writing style. Seems dull and plodding to me. Read some of the front of the novel and a few of the back pages, but not the rest. Cannot say that the descriptions of actions and surroundings added to fuller characterization.

Ah, another trip to the elusive island of Mure, every bit as good as the previous ones. There will be more, as there are unresolved issues. This one was particularly sadder than the others - won't reveal more. But an all-together curl up and lose a few hours in a satisfying read experience. Colgan doesn't disappoint.

This is the third book in the series and a very good follow up to Endless Beach. I hope Jenny Colgan follows writes another follow up as this has been a great story! Recommended! :-)

Colgan's books are charming and a quick read because she has such a deft way of describing her characters and situations in quick word sketches. In this book, Flora MacKenzie is alarmed to find herself pregnant from a boyfriend who always seems to be gone. With Mure plunged into its annual winter darkness and Christmas almost upon them, Flora struggles to find her balance while her brother Fintan's husband is dying of cancer and her brother Innes is befuddled by a separated wife who suddenly finds the island charming again. Flora is also caught up in her friend Lorna's unrequited love for the town doctor and keeping her cafe stocked with enough Christmas cake to feed the locals and the horde of "non-Russian" nuclear submarine sailors. Colgan resolves some situations at the novel but leaves plenty of unanswered questions for the next book in the Summer Seaside Kitchen series.

I love to pick up a Jenny Colgan book and get lost in the make believe world of island people, long, dark, windy winters, love of family and good friends, adult love where nothing is easy and there are no graphic sex scenes but the love is the point, and the struggle to live on a tiny island where every one knows one's every move and can practically read your mind. These books are rarely longer than a six hour read--and I am always sad when I reach the end--despite the happy ending, I want more! Please read her books in order.
