"In a small town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her house. Everyone in town, including her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and she doesn't correct them. In New York, Dean Tenney, former major-league pitcher and Andy's childhood friend, is struggling with a case of the "yips": he can't throw straight anymore, and he can't figure out why. An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button. When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie's house, the two make a deal: Dean won't ask about Evvie's late husband, and Evvie won't ask about Dean's baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken--and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they'll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they've broken, the plans they've changed, and the secrets they've kept. They'll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there's always a chance--right up until the last out"-- Provided by publisher.

With a story and and title character full of pain and hurt, 'Evvie Drake Starts Over' is surprisingly charming, a good bit funny and very endearing.

The characters of 'Evvie Drake Starts Over' are written as fully dimensional adults, with warts, fears, doubts, flashes of brilliance, and, if not always with grace, with humor.

Evvie (pronounced like "Chevy") can't get out of her own head - or house - over guilt she placed on her own heart after the death of the husband she didn't love, and, while not exactly comfortable there, finds it easier than to confront herself. She pretends to grieve for hubby to satisfy the small community who loved him while truly grieving for the person she truly lost: herself.

On the small romance side of 'Evvie Drake Starts Over', add a famous baseball pitcher who inexplicably could no longer pitch. He too is grieving the loss of who he was.

For me, the "romance" side of 'Evvie Drake Starts Over' is fairly insignificant to the friendship side, with yourself first before with others.

I thoroughly enjoyed 'Evvie Drake Starts' Over 4.5 stars for Evvie.

I enjoyed parts of this book but not the whole thing. I liked the beginning, it kept me engaged but it began to peter out after the charity baseball game, with sidebars into getting a vintage pinball machine and the like, and hints of how her husband treated her. I did not care for this book as a whole.

I am a big fan of Linda Holmes, and listen to the podcast she hosts, so I really really WANTED to love this book. Alas... I found it to be boring, predictable and without any joie de vivre. I'm sure it'll make a decent enough Netflix movie, but I was disappointed. Perhaps my expectations going in were too high.

One of the best books I have read in a long time. I read all romance books and this was EXCELLENT.

I LOVED THIS ONE! Evvie Drake Starts Over was a sublime mix of all that I enjoy in women's fiction. The balance of wittiness, family drama, romance, and friendships were perfection. I felt for the heroine's circumstances and I think I laughed as much as I swooned. For a fiction debut, I was truly impressed with this author's writing style. I heartily recommend this book for readers who enjoy women's fiction/romance such as the early works of Taylor Jenkins Reid. It was witty, poignant, and romantic. I'm thrilled to have another women's fiction author I can go to and I hope I don't have to wait too long for her next release.

Review excerpt: "Even though Evvie and Dean quickly become friends, their romantic relationship develops slowly in a very realistic way. They agreed when they first met that she would not ask about baseball and he would not ask about her husband, but they slowly start revealing more about themselves to each other. Evvie tells Dean about Tim’s emotional abuse, and he slowly begins revealing more about his pitching problems. They start to encourage each other to confront their pasts. There is no insta-lust here. In fact there isn’t much lust at all until after the two are good friends. Eventually, slowly, their relationship turns to romance. And what a sweet, sexy romance it is."

Really not quirky nor relatable. The writer just tries too hard. And the tv references are jarring--reminding me of her day job.

A breezy and endearing romance. The characters are definitely easy to root for. Maybe I felt some of the conflict was a little hard to buy, but mostly, I liked how down-to-earth this story was.

A New & Noteworthy pick. Here’s a quirky debut set in Maine for your summer reading pleasure. Evvie is newly widowed with a secret. Dean is a former pitcher for the Yankees who lost his pitch. When they get together, can they make it work? It's pitch-perfect!
